Uploading and encoding

Do you have any recommended specifications for upload?

Buto is designed to accept virtually any video format – but some formats will give you better results than others.
If you’re relatively confident using video software, you can increase the quality of your video by following our guide. Just click Upload and look for the link to “Tips on preparing your videos”.

What’s the best format to use?

To cut a (very) long story short: H.264 is the best. This is partly because it’s a great format to begin with, and partly because our server software that processes and transcodes H.264 is particularly mature and stable, having been developed for the longest time.

What is the maximum file size I can upload?

You can upload files up to 1Gb in size, although this is not recommended due to limitations in the Flash plug-in on most computers.

What is the maximum video length?

Buto supports videos up to 60 minutes long – anything longer can cause playback problems on some versions of Flash player.

Can I upload from a DVD?

Yes. If you browse the disc on your computer you’ll see files ending in .VOB – these are the video files you’ll need to upload. They’re usually pretty big, but provided they’re not copy-protected, they’ll work just fine in Buto.

My video looks squished or stretched!

If you don’t pick a frame size, Buto defaults to 16:9 aspect, the most common for today’s video.

To change: view a video’s details and click the ‘Edit details’ button. The size drop-down menu lets you pick a new aspect or use ‘Custom’ to enter your own.

My video is ‘portrait’: taller than it is wide!

No problem – the Buto player scales dynamically to any aspect, even portrait. To change: just choose ‘Custom’ and enter your own width and height values for the player.
