This time last year we made some predictions for 2010, and reassuringly they all (sort of) came to pass.
Device convergence
Virgin Media announced their internet enabled set-top box, made in partnership with Tivo – on December the 2nd, just in time for this blog post. The other major broadcasters are sure to follow – along with the YouView initiative promising an open, internet-connected TV platform by mid-2011.
Standardised players and formats
We were on the right track. HTML5 video standardisation was the dream, and the latest beta of Internet Explorer 9 supports HTML5 video. IE is still the most widely-used browser in the world, so this is a big deal. If Firefox and Safari start using the same video codecs, then it could really be the end of Flash as a video delivery method.
Clickable video
We did launch clickable video on time, and it’s already being used by online stores, grocers, universities and training houses to make their video interactive at no extra cost.
So three out of three for the 2010 predictions, let’s see what 2011 brings for online video.
From everyone on Team Buto – happy holidays!
